Im 20 and have been working since I was 13. Just until recently, I've become really interested in the world of politics. Now, as a member of the young generation, I've done research and have listened to the very corrupt main stream media on the topic of Social Security. I wont have any SS when I turn 65 and plan to retire. Is it possible to opt out of paying SS now due to the fact that I wont be getting it when the time comes?
Why is it fair for me to pay (already YTD) $361 and some odd cents into the system when I could be putting that into a private fund for my own retirement?
Social Security?
Once you get your Social Security number you must pay into it. You can not opt out. The government has said for a long time that it will run out but it never has. They will never let it either. If they stopped it millions of elderly and disabled people would be put out on the street. They may extend the age when you might be eligible but they will never stop it altogether. Just take a moment and think of what would really happen to all of those people.
Reply:Life isn't fair. You should understand this by the time you are 20.
Reply:It is not fair, and yes, you are being screwed over. You will get some benefits when you retire, but far less than you would with a private investment account: I ran the numbers, and discovered that with the most elementary (and completely brainless) investment scheme, I would have FOUR TIMES as much money in a private account as what my Social Security benefits are worth. After watching the Democrats gloating over having f--ked over the populace by killing Bush's reforms, I will never be voting for any Democrat as long as I live. But, unless and until you can convince Congress to change the law, you are screwed.
Reply:Because there will be social security when you retire, it may have undergone change and may not cover as much but you will get something. The only group that I know of that is totally off of social security is the Amish and they have their own system.
Reply:Yeah your 20 and it shows. LMAO
Reply:No, but what you are suggesting is what the Republicans have been suggesting for years but it keeps getting blocked by the Democrats.
Do you realize that your $361 is actually $722 because your employer matches your SS contribution dollar for dollar?
