I'm curious what do NEOCONS do for fun at their social gatherings. I imagine you guys dress pretty similar at a gathering with good beer, maybe some wine that was learrned about from some taster class. I also think that NEOCONS love talking about how stupid liberals are and how they're ruining the country. Some stuff about a cultural war going on...How Bush is not get fair shake from the media. Am I close or am I just stereotyping...please inform me about your social life.

Some people think that media has nothing to do with teen body image and the way people look at themselves. The thing they don’t realize is teens have eating disorders because of what the media portrays as beautiful. Teens want to be accepted so they don’t act like themselves or look like themselves. Sometimes a teen could start to do drugs and smoke because of how dissatisfied they are with there bodies. The media definitely has an effect on how teens think of themselves and how they handle situations.

The media makes teens think they are not the average weight they are supposed to be because they see the beautiful models and want to look like them so they start to not eat normally which leads to an eating disorder. Eating disorders can harm teen’s body in ways you cannot imagine teens could end up with type 2 diabetes, ruined teeth, ruined esophagus, and become very depressed. Over 54 percent of girls, teens, and women ages 12-23 years are unhappy with their bodies. Approximately 75% of girls as young as nine years old have dieted 2 to 5 times a year. A survey was also taken at a high school and 1/3 of the students thought they were overweight when they were not. Between “5-10 million girls and women and 1 million boys and men are struggling with eating disorders including anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, or borderline condition” Teens can feel like they don’t belong when they see these beautiful models. They look at the models and say “I wish I could be them” I think they just want to get some attention rather than being the same person they are everyday.

Teens are looking for acceptance in the society around them so they look and dress like people they are not. They will mimic the look of celebrities because that is the way the media portrays the way they should dress. Being yourself is more important than anything in the world so why be someone your not. If all you trying to do is climb up the social ladder be yourself doing it, people will like you for who you are not what you pretend to be. Teens don’t act like themselves they might end up doing something they will regret.

Teens have probably seen a model on Americas Next Top Model smoke to get thin or relieve stress. Teenage girls might pick up those habits and use them to get thin. Smoking is a very bad habit hard to break and could damage your lungs and you could get cancer so teens are harmed if they pick up that cigarette because they think it will help them become skinnier. Guys might not think they are tone enough when they pick up a wrestling magazine or watch wrestling on TV so they might start to take steroids to become more muscular. Doing steroids stops the natural hormone production and that is harmful for anyone’s body. If teens thinking smoking and doing drugs will make them look better, they better think again.

Teens treat there body in bad ways because the media says it is beautiful. Today’s teens don’t treat there bodies well because they have abnormal eating behavior, they pretend to be people they are not, and do things they would normally never do. If teens think they are beautiful because the media says they are they are wrong because everyone sees beauty in a different way and they are attracted to different things so who is really deciding these things for our society?

Kamal Karna Roy (also known as Kamal K.K. Roy and Rev. Most, if not all, of Roy's complaints have been dismissed. A 2006 United States District Court for the District of Delaware opinion, Jungle Democracy v. U.S., describes Roy as "no stranger to litigation" and provides a partial list of Roy lawsuits that have been dismissed since 1991.[8]

Despite Roy's lack of success in the courts, his lawsuits have been discussed in law school classrooms and in law related blogs.[9] [10]

In April 2007 Roy filed a civil rights action against, among others, CBS Broadcasting Inc., MSNBC, the United States Government, and controversial radio shock jock Don Imus.[11]

What is a disability (mental/emotional)? And what is the social stigma of mental illness?

I know the definition of disability - basically something that hinders function - but I'm looking for opinions of 'real' people and not specifically those involved with psychiatry, psychology, or social security. If you are involved with these feilds, I still welcome a response. I just don't want those who aren't to discredit their own opinion and not respond.

1 - Would you consider someone who has depression, bipolar, schizophrenia, constant suicidal ideations, or a personality disorder as a person with a disability?

2 - Would your opinion change knowing that the person either can or cannot function adequately independently, either with activities of daily living like showering, preparing a meal, or running errands, or with larger scale responsibilities such as finding and maintaining employment or tending to finances.

3 - What is the social stigma of mental illness and what contributes to this (besides the media, tv, movies, music)?

What is a disability (mental/emotional)? And what is the social stigma of mental illness?
Hi. I am on the inside of the issue--100% disability for OCD-hoarding. It is definitely a real disability, I think even if the person is functioning relatively well in (public areas of) life. It causes severe distress at home. I hid it well from most people for many years of my life, but it has only escalated over the years and it became impossible to hide. I cannot let people who don't already know me, come into my home. They would be shocked and horrified at the mess. This has caused some awkward moments with neighbors over the years!--bringing over Christmas cookies, for example, and rather than inviting them in, I have to stop them on the porch. Or someone asks to use my phone, and I bring them the cordless outside! In the winter!

I function a little better when there is someone steady in my life (a partner), because then there is more shame and more motivation to do things like shower and get rid of trash. I have not held a real job in more than 10 years; I would either get fired for working too slowly (too meticulous and perfectionistic) or I would have a stress attack (from keeping up the pretense of "normal" at work) and quit, leaving the people wondering what happened. Both of those have happened more than once.

The social stigma is enormous for this particular variation. I think that the majority of OCD people "lean" toward the compulsively-neat side of the spectrum, and many more-or-less normal people have a few OCD "clean" tendencies, too. So when people encounter an OCD hoarder, it is somewhat unusual--though far from uncommon (many people hide it successfully)--and they are surprised, repulsed and disgusted. And it makes the newspapers when the authorities find out about one of us! Animal hoarders are a subset of this group; I am not that, but I feel sorry for people who are. I think they start out to do good, but just get overwhelmed and can't keep up with their chores/duties. Lord knows, I know what overwhelmed feels like. I can look at a problem for hours, lol.

People think that a person whose house is dirty and/or cluttered is dirty about their person. This is not always true. Or that anything they cook in their kitchen would not be sanitary. Also not necessarily true . . . although I would be wary of the people who have several indoor cats. It is hard to keep up and keep them off your countertops.

On a very few occasions, I have had no choice but to let a repairman into my (rental!) house--a plumber, or the cable guy. I am always completely humiliated, because they try not to openly say anything, but I see their eyes get wide and the look on their faces, and they hurry through the job so that they can get away. Seriously. Like they are afraid I will hurt them. Or that my illness will rub off. And I always know that they go home and tell their family and friends, "You will NOT believe the place I was in today." It is really embarrassing and discouraging. Before my disability case was approved, I was on SSI and Medicaid and EBT, and I always imagined that people were shaking their heads saying, "God, poor people are disgusting and beyond help." And it wasn't because I was poor! Because now I am not, but still have not been able to change much.

My family says that they were holding their breath waiting for the disability claim to be approved, because they knew all it would take to upset my entire life was for the landlord to drop by and me to get kicked out on the street. Poor people get referred to the local authorities; well-off people are eccentric. There are some very famous stories of people who had OCD and/or hoarding. Check out this site also:

Reply:1- No question, yes. They are all disabilities.

2- Functioning adequately no longer constitutes "disabled", unless there are some or numerous relapses, and you can be sure in many cases there are. Also, even functioning adequately, the mentally ill are less likely to cope with the stresses that others do. As soon as stress level goes up, their functioning ability suffers. Sudden problems can occur with the kind and dose of medication they're taking, and this factors in.

3- The mentally ill are often perceived as stupid or dangerous. Only a small percentage are dangerous, and most aren't at all stupid.
Reply:As far as disability is concerned, I feel that anyone who is impeded in life, or has limited function in society due to a mental/emotional disorder..is disabled to the extent their illness causes them to be different from everyone else in a way they do not understand. Some in society do not understand the factors/stimulus involved in mental/emotional disorders, making them blind to the fact that a person, a human being lies beneath the exterior they gaze upon. In some ways, society works to alleviate the problem, yet in others, society has a way of shunning those who are different and causing more problems. God Bless

How does media coverage of crime expedite crime policy initiatives, and do Americans react too quickly to media coverage to adopt new policies, or are reactions improved because of the speed at which social issues are reported?

Often, media coverage of crime causes reflex reactions that end up with new laws being implemented that really are unnecessary because they often are just rewording the existing laws in order to created a new one. The bottom line is that one ends up being charged with breaking a dozen different laws for the same offense.

Reply:I think a lot of things have been "beaten to death" by the mainstream media. The media doesn't really care as long as there's a story and they can get it. While the things they find out aren't necessarily false, they do exagerrate certain parts of it to make it seem worse or better than it really is. Many of us just need to sit back and think to ourselves about the issues and not let the media decide for us what we should think. Ultimately, I believe that we need to take care of this country. To preserve what we have and to allow our children to have the same opportunities that we had. I just don't believe that going on an endless war trying to root out all of the world's terrorists is the answer.

Reply:I agree that the race card is being beaten to death, but I don't agree that this is some sort of brainwashing plot by corporate America. It's more about ratings.

I think that since the media is a business, it gives us what we want. A lot of people don't want to talk about economic policy or the intracacies of foreign policy because it is either dull or complicated. However, stories about race can be sensationalized, and there isn't a whole lot of complicated economic or political theory behind it. For whatever reason it draws the attention of people.

If something draws the attention of people, then it draws the attention of advertisers. If it draws the attention of advertisers, it draws money. And ultimately, this is what it is about.
Reply:This story will be milked for all its worth only until something more attention grabbing comes alomg, then be forgotten.
Reply:It is definetely being beaten to death, but was not unexpected. There was no way this campaign was going to pass by without race becoming an issue. Some people needed this to happen so they could point and say Obama and black people are the racist, not us. Rather than these people saying they fear and dislike black people, which they know is socially unacceptable to say, it allows them to point to this issue and put the blame elsewhere. It's a way to say, "it's not us, it's those black people."

I have no issue with the media exploring everything about a candidate, but when it is beaten to death like this, then it stops being informative. We will end up in this country not making progress because we will be bogged down in things like this. As long as we keep fighting among ourselves, the elite/business, will be able to do things unnoticed by the rest of us.

Reply:Yes, the media and many politicians are beating the race issue to death but I don't agree with the brainwashing part of your statement. I am a older guy. I have been around a long time. Let me tell you, regardless of what is being touted by the media, real people of all races are getting along pretty well.

I see lots of young people of all different races hanging out together and dating etc. Perhaps they did not get the memo that they are not supposed to get along that well.

It is up to the young people to change things. It has always been so. That is why young people should seek out and read the works of our Founding Fathers and learn the real History of America as it was formed and grew in the context of time. Not by looking back through the filter of modern sensibilities and deriding everything. If you do this you can bring America closer to the vision the Founders had for her from the beginning.

If the average american knew who he was, and what he is all about, he would be a huge threat to hillary's presidential campaign. Ron paul is EXTREMELY popular among the people that know who he is because he truly represents the american people, not the establishment. Ron Paul has a voting record in congress that demonstrates that he will not be pushed into voting for any unconstitutional legislation, such as the patriot act, or the real id act, or the torture bill. He is 1 of only 6 republicans that voted against the war. Ron Paul has also been named "the taxpayers best friend."

A source said that the page's owners shut it down because Paul supporters "invaded the place."

Yet, the big media companies IGNORE Ron Paul on their 24 hour news networks. Every other story is about which celebrity is endorsing barak obama, or what color dress Hillary wore last week at a fundraiser. How did this happen? Look up elite, élite in a Dictionary.Elite (also spelt Élite) is taken from the latin, eligere, "to elect". In sociology as in general usage, the élite (the "elect," from French) is a relatively small dominant group within a larger society, which enjoys a privileged status which is upheld by individuals of lower social status within the structure of a group. When applied to an individual, as in the phrase "many elites come to this restaurant," the usage quite economically both refers to an individual within that class and establishes the speaker as non-elite.

An elite is the result of economic and political forces within a social structure. Upon formation, societies have always had the tendency to stratify due to a combination of politics and ability. The position of an elite at the top of the social strata almost invariably puts it in a position of leadership and often subjects the holders of elite status to pressure to maintain their position as part of the elite. Religious elite

In religion the Latin form "elect" is preferred over the French form "elite" in discussing Cathar or Calvinist theology, for examples, and the social structure that is theologically driven. Other religious groups may use expressions like "the saints" to describe the elect.

Linguistic elite

Some elite groups speak a language that is not shared by the commonality: in Tsarist Russia and in Vietnam the elite spoke French, in Plantagenet England the elite spoke Anglo-Norman, and in Ptolemaic Egypt the elite spoke Koine Greek. Class elite

Complex social rules can determine when an occasion is sufficiently informal so that a man may correctly wear this hat.Elite advantages are the usual ones of a dominant social class: easier access to capital and political power, more rigorous education largely free of indoctrination, resulting in cultural influence, and leadership.

Elites may justify their existence based on claims of inherited position; with the rise in authority of science, certain 19th and 20th century elites have embraced pseudoscientific justifications of genetic or racial superiority. In Nazi Germany, genetic superiority was used as the basis of an imagined "Aryan" elite. Elite classes headed by monarchies have traditionally employed religious sanctions for their position.

Meritocracy is a facet of society that tries to promote merit as a route to the elite. Societies such as that of the United States have it in their culture to promote such a facet [see Horatio Alger]. However, while it tends to be imperfect it sheds light as to what many believe to be the "ideal" elite: an elite that is porous and whose members have earned their position as society's top class.

Aristocracy and oligarchy are social systems which feature an elite as the ruling class. An elite group, ranged round the alpha male, is a distinct feature of other closely-related social primates.

Educational elite

Elites are educated to govern. While common public education is often designed to educate the general population to produce knowledgeable and skilled citizens, the elite approach to education is often presented at a more intellectual and demanding level, and is geared to produce leaders of a sort. It is generally defined at education geared at producing an individual capable of thinking at an intellectual level more advanced than the general population, consisting of diverse philosophical ideals and theories in order to enable the elite to logically evaluate situations.

Financial elite

Wealth is not a sure sign of elite status, as the "new rich" are frequently seen as arriving from non-elite positions. Neither does an elite necessarily show a sense of public obligation.

Military elite

A military elite is a military unit of soldiers or recruits picked for their competence and put in a special, elite unit. Elite units enjoy some benefits as compared to other units, at least in the form of higher status, but often also higher pay and better equipment. Napoléons Imperial Guard would be a good example. Note that the word elite in the military sense is fundamentally different from most other uses of the term. A social or societal elite has usually not been picked by anyone except themselves and do not necessarily make part of the elite due to their competence. Military elite units do not exercise any special leadership over other units. In the societal and social sense of the word, the elite of the army is the officer corps, not the elite units.

In the military community, it is considered doubtful if the creation of elite units are expected to do the same things as a regular military unit, only better, (as opposed to special forces that are expected to do other things than regular soldiers)is good resource manangement. Critics argue that it creates a negative "second class soldier"-feeling among the regular units. Furthermore they argue that an especially competent soldier does more good as an NCO or as just the guy who sets a good inspiring example for his comrades.

Historically many elite forces have been created and maintained as much for political reasons as for military ones. The leaders feel they need something more politically reliable than ordinary units and create elite units, hoping that the priviliges, the extra political indoctrination that such elite forces are typically given and the pride in belonging to an elite will make them more loyal. Typically, it works. Waffen-SS would be an obvious example.

Elitism

In elite theory as developed by Marxist political scientists like Michael Parenti, all sufficiently large social groups will have some kind of elite group within them that actively participates in the group's political dynamics. When a group is arbitrarily excluded from the larger society, such as in the case of the racism that was widespread in the United States prior to the success of the American Civil Rights Movement, then elite members of the excluded group may form a counter-elite to fight for their group's interests (although they may be fighting for those interests only to the extent they mesh with the counter-elite's interests). Of course, the dominant elite can neutralize the counter-elite through the classic divide-and-conquer strategy of admitting key members of the counter-elite into the elite.

Elitism usually draws envy and resentment from the lower classes and the counter-elite. There are cases where elites arguably use this resentment of an elite to maintain their position. See Communism. The Elite in the United States also use this method of control via popular culture and media influence. Author C. Media is playing a great role today in our lives.They make our voice reach everywhere, highlight problems, disclose ministers works.Media is more active now.But problem also comes,The news channels prefer to show a celebrity's activities instead of social activities.Total people killed instead of total people saved,Having headlines of matter which do not concern us directly or indirectly.i myself read newspapers for the truth, because i know the channels will not show the correct news.Obviously the channels want to get themselves attention.

Aaj Tak , Zee News, India TV are not news channels but a discovery channel of India.Should Media be controlled by some type of authority.

Ron Paul has a voting record in congress that demonstrates that he will not be pushed into voting for any unconstitutional legislation, such as the patriot act, or the real id act, or the torture bill. He is 1 of only 6 republicans that voted against the war. Ron Paul has also been named "the taxpayers best friend."

Yet, the big media companies IGNORE Ron Paul on their 24 hour news networks. Every other story is about which celebrity is endorsing barak obama, or what color dress Hillary wore last week at a fundraiser. How did this happen? Social security is not a problem, believe it or not...

Social Security is not in crisis. The explanation is way too long to go into here but, Alan Greenspan gave, in his recently published book, an honest and accurate assessment of where we are. We are fine and it is not a looming budget crisis as many candidates attested to.

Left out of last night's debate is that Social Security is NOT a budget line item. The budget borrows money from the account and doesn't return it to out-pace the debt service and administration of the program, but, it is NOTa part of the federal budget. Nobody gets a chance to vote for or veto it. The media has led everyone to believe otherwise. It's just not true that social security is in any trouble looking out 30 years and making conservative fiscal assumptions on employment and the "annuity" to be paid..

Yeah, I got the feeling they were fudging some facts about Social Security. I didn't realize Social Security was not a budget item, so they had me fooled.

But even with all the spin, "reforming'' Social Security is still a non starter. For example, I can't imagine the Michiganders want to eliminate Social Security after losing their auto company pensions. The Repubs. must be playing to the old time conservative base: the one that was based on rolling back the New Deal, pointing nuclear missiles at Russia, and eliminating the UN.

My feeling is that Social Security would have few problems if the Trust Fund wasn't being raided. I don't think this will be difficult for most people to comprehend if they ever get a truthful explanation.

Medicare is the what will really bankrupt the treasury. Of course, Republicans can't talk about this without raising criticisms of their big pharm give away and the unsustainable system of medical care that we have for everyone.

Reply:Obviously we are not reading the same material. When social security was founded, 10 workers supported 1 retired person. Today 6 workers are supporting a retired person. Estimates in 15 to 20 years say that as few as 4 to 5 will be supporting a retired worker.

Social security as we know it today is broken. First of all, the money collected by FICA goes into the general fund for politicians to spend. There is no Social Security Lockbox. Just a bunch of federal IOU's right now.

Secondly, Social Security is getting about 1.5% return on the money it lends the government. Hello! My 401K is getting a 15 to 20% return. Why shouldn't I be able to take my 6.2% that goes to FICA and place it in a government approved 401K for retirement. If I am forced to contribute, why can't I manage my own piece. That way the politicians will not spend it. My employer also pays 6.2% of what I make into Social Security. This should be used to support those who are less fortunate.

If I can control my money, I can also pass this onto my children in the future. So the nest egg that I earned can also be used to support my children in the future. This makes much more sense than the crap program that we have today.

On the other hand, a May 25 NBC Nightly News report, correspondent Campbell Brown reported claims of liberal bias in public broadcasting by Kenneth Y. Tomlinson, the Republican chairman of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), and Cliff Kincaid, an editor at the conservative watchdog group Accuracy in Media (AIM), but the report provided no evidence to support these allegations and offered no assessment about whether they are credible.

As a liberal Fox basher said, "At least FOX hasn't flip flopped- they've alway been blatantly conservatively biased!"

The currant laws on illegal immigration have been unenforced by this Republican Administration thus contributing to a breach in security of our entire southern border with Mexico, and an increase of up to 20 million more people in the United States.

The changes in Social Security, was an incredibley stupid idea of using half of the SS contributions of workers salary to an individual private account like an IRA. This of course would never work because when a worker is subject to losing a job by down sizing or out sourcing he/she will undoudtedly go to the private account and empty it. It will serve no purpose when a person gets old enough to draw SS because the worker will have reduced the amount in the private account.

The war in Iraq was the biggest military blunder in the history of civilization.

Social values are evolving at an alarming rate. Global issues are crowding local media venues. Traditional political values are becoming obsolete. How will this affect 'Cultural Preservation,' when our attention span is committed elsewhere?

With eroding social values, how can we preserve cultural identity?
With information revolution, the world is becoming a smaller place by the day. Thus ones cultural uniqueness, or ones cultural identity may not be so much personal anymore.

With growing interaction amongst different cultures and societies, the cultural uniqueness begins to fade and this gives way to a more tolerant and acceptable form of global culture and society. Though it'll take ages before the cultural and social boundaries are insignificant once and for all, it'll result in a more coherent society.
Reply:Our social values have been changing for decades, for longer than decades, the results of which has been a clear change in our culture through inter-racial marriages which has produced sub races with new cultures and new beliefs. Where have you been? We are evolving as we should.

I'm not exactly talking about the power, power here means their network, their working style, their dedication, their potential, their vision, their honesty, their responsibility towards the society.

The media has become so powerfull that they reaches all aspects of life, crime, social problems such efficiently and when they highlight those problems, those crimes then our police, or government becomes active? Why can't they do these things when it's their responsibility?

Suggestion: People should become proactive and more sensitive towards the social, political and ethical issues. Raise your concern and you'll see you are not alone.

In democracy, there ought to be different agencies playing their respective role. It is difficult to say one organ is more powerful than another. Media is helpful in highlighting the merits and demerits of the governmental action. But that does not mean that the media is at liberty to sensationalise and become judgmental. It is not uncommon to find that many of the news items are biased and one sided. On such occasions, Government is at liberty to curb them. Media cannot be allowed to run the government.

Reply:here in the Philippines, that situation is true. not only because mass media reaches ore people than the whole gov't but because the people trust mediamen than gov't officials. i cant blame them because we really have a nasty political system here.

many if not most public officials are called "trapo" (rags) from traditional politicians. all they do is corrupt the system and take public funds for themselves. this is commonplace here. to get a good picture, watch our local news with scenes from the senate or congress. u will see many officials chatting with their seatmates or on the phone. some are even sleeping during sessions.

in contrast, the media, especially the 2 biggest networks here, have foundations that help in calamities and other social needs like health and education. they distribute books and educational materials to far corners of the country to augment the measly budget of the govt.

please note that the gov't budget allots more for repaying of debts and the millitary than education and health, which is unconstitutional. the health sector allots about a peso for each Filipino. also note that the budget gives millions of pesos (if im not mistaken) to each congressman (even those who are caught sleeping in session) as their "pork barrel" which they are "supposed" to use in developing their respective districts.

also, there are programs here the expose the "misbehavings" of public officials, becuase even if the issues are very public, nobody does anything bout them excpt when the media exposes them.

we Filipinos generally rely on the private sector in protecting and upholding our rights against the gov't, which should not be the case.

An increasing amount of television is taken up by 'fly on the wall' programs which serve up bad driving, drunkeness and violence as entertainment. This is bound to not only influence perspectives but also promote the subject matter as 'normal' or common behaviour, Older people see this stuff and are frightened by it, while some elements of our youth see it and emulate it. So I reckon the most prevalent social issue today is the minority of thugs and drunks who are ruining quality of life for the rest of us ... and yes, the media are as guilty as the perpetrators.

Why do the media denigrate men? Concerted contempt for men now seems to have become pervasive in popular culture, from advertising to political talk-shows. This has very largely been as a result of negative depiction of men by the media and by constant reinforcement. The effects of such persistent denigration have never been independently or adequately studied until now.

The things the media present and the manner in which they are presented - notably on television and in Hollywood films - obviously have a powerful effect in the public mind. When viewers are constantly being bombarded with images of men being put down, subjected to snide 'asides', slapped around, generally treated as idiots, or otherwise abused, viewers eventually come to perceive of this kind of behaviour as being normal and permissible. However, such constant misrepresentations are unhealthy, anti-social, sexist, and completely unacceptable.

And, whereas violence again women is frowned upon by the media, violence against men is taken lightly and often presented as being 'humourous'. In more general terms, the media appear to believe that to depict a woman brutally assaulting a man is 'alright'. This is blatantly irresponsible and sexist and sends out a very wrong message.

Another common misperception perpetrated by the media is that of male cultural and economic advantage. The truth is that while white male billionaires might form an elite superclass, the average male worker is every bit as exploited - if not more so - than his female counterpart.

Don't shoot the messenger? Sometimes the messenger deserves to be shot!

Why do the media persistently denigrate men?
You're right on all counts. Currently media seem to enjoy sending out movies with the message that men are sex machines but also losers when they can't find a woman, or find the perfect woman and act the fool to win her. Examples include Adam Sandler movies, The 40 yr old virgion and Good Luck Chuck. They all encourage women to look down on men as boys in adult bodies who need cuddling and coodling and alot of , well sex. It sends the wrong message to many young women and is completely unacceptable.

Many young men I know are responsible adults who have a balance between career, family and social life. One of them is a law medalist who has constant contact with his family, loves fishing and (ahem) gambling as much as he loves the study of law. He's not one of those idiots indicated in movies.

As for economic advantage - I believe that millionares mainly work for their money, as do females and as should everyone else. Work to reap rewards. If they are criticised only because they are rich and indicate the "all boys club", then these criticisms are unwarranted. As for millionares who marry women in the "sugar daddy" situation, don't blame the men - the women allow themselves to be exploited for their bodies. The man hasn't put any pressure on them - unless you say money acts as a financial pressure. Well its not.

Re the messenger - the media is more than the messenger, they are the horse's mouth in these cases.

Any extended analysis of everything from adverts and soaps to newspapers and film will show that pretty much all media is riddled with offensive, steretypical, brainwashing rubbish because, as a previous answerer stated, it's not there to be accurate, enlightening, fair, straightforward or honest, it's simply designed to capture viewers and/or sell products.

Furthermore, many of the decisions taken by the heads of television stations represent their own views of the world. It does not just apply to men but to everyone, children are shown girls in pink playing with dolls and boys getting muddy playing at soldiers - sexist attitudes to the rough treatment or aggression of boys and men are worldwide and must be the next focus of feminism - for instance, men may be responsible for the majority of violent crime, yet they are far more likely to be the VICTIMS of violent crime than women, especially if they are young men. This constant assumption that men are tough, insensitive, invioable, rulers of the world is a smokescreen that only creates a culture of silence and fear for any boys or men who are experiencing the opposite.

The fact is, this gender dividing and conquering gets us all no-where, no man or woman should feel that they are the particular focus of ridicule, violence or oppression in their daily lives or in the media just because of their gender. Unfortunately, we are unlikely to have much effect on the all-powerful media corporations unless we could achieve mass viewer rejection on single channels, shows or products, so all we can really do is keep it real in our own lives and speak out about sexism and the lies and damage of the media.
Reply:Yeah, you are right. The only denigration of women they do is portraying them in more "traditional" roles in commercials, but that is because most people on those "traditional women roles" are women, so their commercial appeal to them.
Reply:It depends on what you watch. The media wants ratings, men wander off to the internet, downloads computer games etc. so at certain times the main audience is women, if they think men bashing will attract the harpies out of the woodwork to watch some talk show they will use it.

I do take your points seriously, but the media have the right to do everything that will increase their ratings, as long as its legal.

I think men are supposed to be able to take it because

1/ Men should be able to take a few knocks without blubbing,

2/ Its only payback time. Men deserve it after years of oppressing women, and

3/ Making men look bad or stupid is popular and will sell your product.

The most insidious thing is when men internalise the negative stereotypes and believe themselves to be bad/stupid/worth less than women. I think its also part of the reason that domestic violence against men is not taken anywhere near as seriously as that against women, even by male victims themselves.

However one of the reasons this denigration of males continues to be acceptable is ironically, the notion that men are superior to women and can "take it like a man." That's why it's considered humorous to watch a man get beaten up by a woman on screen. At heart it is the very sexist assumption that "well, she can't REALLY do him any damage since she's a woman." This seems to be the case regardless of differences in size and strength between them.

Personally I think the real cure for denigration in the media (of both men and women) is not shooting the messenger, censorship or the like. People need to learn to think for themselves. The characters in Dumb and Dumber are not role models.

Society has structures and rules that are like unwritten laws which detail a man's role from birth to death...

Modern Australian society is gradually changing and broadening the role of males but traditionally a boy grew to be a youth and during his adolescence was made to feel responsible for the welfare of the entire family. It is almost as though young men were grooomed to take over the role of provider should anything happen to the father... a sensible thing considering in days gone by there were many social issues, like war, and vocational, like workplace accidents, that meant men were at threat of dying. The fact that men often die before their partners it was also necessary that someone, the son, would care for the mother after the father's passing.

Should the youth get to adulthood it was necessary for him to find a female mate, a wife, to continue the family name, by creating an heir. Family traditions often insisted on sons being named for their fathers and/or grandfathers, so that not only surnames were carried on but also first names and middle names.

it was then the new fathers role to provide for the wife and children and to instill in them the same traditions and beliefs of his family of origin.

Society expected that men would be gainfully employed, be able and willing to provide for their wives and children, and that once the chidlren were raised and his role no longer so necessary he would retire to the fireplace with his pipe and slippers until he died.

The laws which prevent same sex marriages inhibit the freedom of choice for men and women who are not heterosexual. They are written laws which tell men how to behave. They create an expectation that men will choose a female mate.

The foremost religions of our society also have expectations of males and how they will grow up, what they will do as they grow up and how they in turn will raise their family.

Men are depicted in all kinds of media as 'big', 'strong', 'able', and 'responsible'. This constant depiction of men and boys creates an expectation in society that all males will be this way.

A man's identity is usually equated with his profession or other significant behviour. A male is often introduced, not only by his name but also by his profession and/or social standing

These kids are being left with parents that by their own admission left their children "unattended". This is without referring to the mass of evidence the Police have against them, as suspects in a murder investigation. Plus they have been forced into a media bubble not of their making. The trauma of this will probably never leave them. It appears that the social services are not acting as action would create controversy because the media has hyped the McCanns up to be infallible.

Has everybody including the social services forgotten about the McCanns other children?
I am sure social services are addressing issues, this would not be public knowledge, confidentiality laws prevent this . . .

Hey, at first, I would start to collect some groups, you can't write something of every group, then get info's about their believes (religions) and then compare them. Collect some histories of each group to get some more information's. Maybe watching documentaries itself could help you. Reading through some articles in the Internet to start to understand them. Maybe you will find a way to get a relation to them. I mean goths aren't that bad. I mean, they are friendly when you accept them. Just choose groups you have heard yourself, or you know about. Because, if you find a social group that is new to you, you need to understand the whole group's believe and so on. I hope I could help you.

Regarding your question about Madonna, Madonna's public behaviour does NOT deserve the publicity the media accords it. Why can't the media focus its resources on promoting all the things that foster social, MORAL and spiritual (not necessarily specific religion) conscious society instead of weirdo artist on two pieces of wood at a regular angle to each other? Let us get our values right instead of making money and "freedom" of expression our religion. The question I have is this: Does one have to provoke outrageous contoversy to make money? Where is the right of the religious faithful? The mainstream media are co-consipirators in this mundane business of money and infamity over reason.

We, the populations, are responsible for these behaviors. If we don't watch it, they won't do it, and media won't cover it.

Again, what harm is that doing you? If you don't like it, don't give them any financial support.

MASS MEDIA : ABU GHRAIB

INTRODUCTION

Although in recent months, Abu Ghraib has not been making front page news, it is still an issue at large in the United States and the world. Millions around the globe witnessed shocking images of tortured Iraqis at Abu Ghraib at the hands of their American captors; the reaction was anger and outrage. The constant bombardment of shocking photos and articles made sure that everyone knew about the problem at hand. And that something needed to happen to resolve this issue.

In this paper I will be exploring the mass media coverage of the Abu Ghraib Prison scandal. I will examine a few different media outlets such as the New York Times and the Washington Times. I will also attempt to compare the amount of coverage given to Abu Ghraib by the two newspapers as well as the underlying motives of the liberal New York Times and the conservative Washington Times. Also, I will be examining the Abu Ghraib coverage broadcasted on national television in the United States. CNN, a known liberal news station and The Fox News Channel a known conservative news station will be my mediums. I will be examining them to see if I can find distortions in the coverage, the amount of coverage, bias in the coverage, and more importantly the repercussions of the said statements from the newspaper and television.

I chose these particular news mediums because they are all well known, trusted institutions of news. Also it is important to understand that each carry their own political views, whether they are Republican or Democratic. That being said, I believe we will find many differences in the coverage of the Abu Ghraib Prison scandal between the news agencies

METHODS

To acquire data for my analysis of Abu Ghraib media coverage I turned to the primary sources themselves. By using the internet to review old articles and the fact that I constantly watch cable news, I was able to review a fair amount of data. Some of which is stuff I remember from watching CNN and FNC during the height of the Abu Ghraib pandemic.

By contacting staff writers at the Washington Times and using microfiche to review articles posted by the New York Times, I was able to see many differences in the media coverage. However, the internet proved to be my most valuable player in helping me compile my research. Depending on the key words used to research Abu Ghraib in the media I would get many different results. By typing in “Abu Ghraib” I would get websites that were mostly focused on the cold hard facts of the case without the left or right wing bias. However, when I typed in words like distortions, propaganda, and sensationalism attached with Abu Ghraib I found that the websites information changed dramatically. I noticed a great deal of what I would call finger pointing, people playing the blame game, and the attempted defamation of character was always popular.

The three search engines used where; Yahoo, Google, and Ask.com. For the most part the three search engines returned most of the same information but it’s always nice to mix it up a little. It was difficult to sift through what I considered to be accurate coverage and what I will call uneducated coverage of the issue. Everyone’s got an opinion but I think it’s best to just stick to the facts of the cases and use the comments and statements of accredited news agencies

In order to discuss differences in media coverage of Abu Ghraib I needed to first understand what actually happened at Abu Ghraib. To complete this task I used a number of internet sites describing the events that took place. Wikipedia on the web proved to be the most complete, unbiased information on the actual facts and timelines of the case.

BACKGROUND

In the early months of 2003, various abuses and torture tactics were being used on inmates at the Abu Ghraib Prison. Private contractors, CIA officers, and U.S. armed forces were among the many individuals who would ultimately be charged with cruel and unusual treatment of prisoners. On April 28th, 2004, the emergence of various reports of abuse and graphic pictures of Americans abusing POW’s appeared in the international media. CBS aired an episode of 60 minutes 2 that went into graphic detail of the events at Abu Ghraib. The New York Times published an article on the abuse just 2 days later. I will go into greater details of this story later in this report.

The damage of this scandal to the U.S.’s credibility was tremendous. The news of the abuse reverberated throughout the entire Arab world, leading millions to believe that these instances represented a “broader American attitude of disrespect and violence towards Arabs.”(CNN) The U.S. countered by saying that the abuses were committed by a handful of low-ranking personnel, and that their individual actions did not represent the U.S. armed forces as a whole. In response to the scandal the removal of 17 officers from duty, the arrest 7 soldiers for dereliction of duty, maltreatment, aggravated assault, and battery, for which they were sent to prison, as well as 2 officers who spent 10 year prison terms.

Ironically, the Abu Ghraib Prison scandal, led by the U.S. coalition, was not the first account of torture that the walls of the prison had seen. In fact, thousands of political prisoners held by Saddam Hussein were believed to have been tortured and murdered. “Up to 4 thousand prisoners are thought to have been executed there in 1984 alone. Prisoners are routinely executed, guards fed prisoners into plastic shredders, and there are even allegations that some of these detainees were subjected to experiments as part of Iraq’s chemical and biological weapons program.”(Wikipedia 2004) After Baghdad was invaded and the government was overthrown, the U.S. took over the prison where it would eventually come to hold over 5 thousand prisoners.

Washington Times

The Washington Times is a D.C. newspaper that reaches about 103,017 readers on a daily basis. It was created by the Rev. Sun Myung Moon to be the conservative counterpoint to the liberal Washington post. Both papers claimed to print neutral news coverage but reserve the right to print conservative and liberal opinions in the respective papers.

The Washington times is known and is seen as a conservative newspaper. By conservative, I mean that their political views are in support of traditional values and the “existing social order.” The support of republicans in times of political discussions and events is also common place. This is precisely why we have seen a difference in the amount of coverage in Abu Ghraib by the New York Times versus the Washington Times.

According to Jennifer Harper, of the Washington Times,” positive images and accounts of the U.S. armed forces is rare.”(Harper 2005) She goes on to give an example, “30 U.S. airmen and soldiers delivered school supplies and toys - gifts from American children - to an Iraqi village.” “Yesterday air force medical teams airlifted a critically ill infant and mother to an Ohio hospital for treatment.”(Harper 2005) The question is why are these stories being overshadowed by all the bad images of the war? The Washington Times claims it does an excellent job at staying neutral.

The Washington times, as well as other agencies such as the Media Research Center, are very suspicious of the fact that there are broadcasters in news companies using their influence to build a case against the war in Iraq, as well as the Bush administration. Abu Ghraib proved to be the catalyst for many to turn away from the war on terror and question the legitimacy of the war in Iraq. For this reason, the Washington Times opted out of sensationalistic media coverage of the Abu Ghraib incident. The Washington Times was not one to publish a ridiculous amount of shock articles along with anger incising photographs to amplify the severity of the events. The liberal media has had no such qualms doing so; as the Washington Times has gone on to say in many of their articles.

Why would the Washington Times shy away from an obscene amount of coverage of Abu Ghraib? Why would they retaliate and say that the liberal media is using the scandal to undermine Bush’s war efforts. The answer is simple. We have a Conservative in office. The Washington Times and any conservative media for that matter do not want to see their poster boy’s image tarnished. It is in the Washington Times best interest to keep a republican in office and writing stories that discredit Bush’s control on the situation at hand would have a negative effect… As we have seen from the “bombardment of Abu Ghraib images from CBS, CNN, Washington Post, and especially the New York Times.”(O’Reilly, 2004)

Fox News Channel

Another entity with similar conservative ideology is the Fox News Channel, with their “hardballer” Bill O’Reilly. Fox News Channel was founded by Rupert Murdoch in an attempt to combat the liberal media. They operate under the slogans “Fair and Balanced”, “We report you decide”, and as Bill O’Reilly says, “your now entering a no spin zone.” Although Fox News Channel was criticized in the 2000 election for being, “the last to retract the call of Florida for Gore and first to call Florida for Bush, their record of being unbiased is pretty good.”(Wikipedia 2003)

Perhaps the most well known and noteworthy television personality on the Fox News Channel is Bill O’Reilly. He is known for his conservative political views, unorthodox methods of interviewing guests on his show, and sensational commentary. As someone who watches the O’Reilly Factor, it was not hard to compile the feelings and articles from O’Reilly on the Abu Ghraib Prison scandal. On a side note, O’Reilly does not believe he is either a conservative or a liberal. As he has stated time and time again.

In response to the Abu Ghraib scandal, O’Reilly was forthcoming to say that the photos did show abuse but was reluctant to admit that the photos showed what the New York Times Dubbed as torture. O’Reilly’s focus was more turned toward what he perceived as sensational coverage of Abu Ghraib by the leftist media and the consequences of their journalism. O’Reilly goes on to say that “the New York Times, of course is using the prisoner story to hammer the Bush administration and continue to do so, but here’s the unintended consequence of that. By creating hysteria over Abu Ghraib, the much more important war on terror story has vanished from the newspapers. Last weeks dog and pony show by Senators Kennedy and Bidden once again placed blame on the Bush Administration. And the senators did everything they could to mandate no coercive interrogations of suspected terrorists. Meantime foreign governments are encouraging suicide killers and we are the targets. Yet it’s all Abu Ghraib, all the time in much of the media, politics once again trumping your safety.”(O’Reilly 2004) He also states that the New York Times ran with 43 front page stories on Abu Ghraib in 47 days. An incredible amount of coverage.

New York Times

The New York Times is published in New York City but is an international newspaper. “It is owned by the New York Times Co. which also publishes some 40 other newspapers including the international Herald Tribune and the Boston Globe.” We will return to the Globe later in the essay. The New York Times is viewed by many to be a liberal newspaper. By liberal I mean that they are concerned with individual rights, civil liberties and the redistribution of wealth from rich to poor. Tax breaks for the poor are generally favored over tax breaks for the rich.

The New York Times is usually thought of as supporting the Democratic Party. It has been suggested that “during presidential campaigns the paper systematically gives more coverage to democratic topics, but only when the incumbent president is a republican.”(FNC 2005) Based on these facts some might assume that the New York Times would have much to gain from extensive coverage of Abu Ghraib. Much like their opponent conservative paper, the New York Times has a stake in the reactions of their readers. For the liberal side of the news Abu Ghraib was the Holly Grail of leverage points.

There is no doubt that the New York Times covered the Abu Ghraib prison scandal extensively. In fact from April 29, 2004 to may 31, 2004 the Abu Ghraib scandal was on the front page of the New York Times in full color. A few of the 32 headlines read,” Iraqi recounts hours of abuse by U.S. troops. The solider; from picture of pride to symbol of abuse, and abuse; afghan deaths linked to a unit in Iraq.” (NYT 2004) All articles painted vivid images of the tortured and mutilated Iraqis in the minds of Americans and the world. Many of the articles also attempted to illustrate the incompetence followed by the underhand ness of the bush administration and the U.S. armed forces as a whole.

One article in particular, Abu Ghraib, Stonewashed, published by the New York Times read, “while piously declaring its determination to unearth the truth about Abu Ghraib, the Bush Administration has spent nearly 2 months obstructing investigations by the army and members of congress. It has dragged out the Armies inquiry, withheld crucial government documents from a senate committee and stonewalled senators over dozens of Red Cross reports that document the horrible treatment of Iraqis at American military prisons.”(NYT 6/30/04). This seems to be one of the running themes in the liberal media.

As mentioned before the New York Times publishes the Boston Globe. Like the New York Times the Globe is also thought of as having liberal bias toward political issues. Apparently this bias carried over into the Abu Ghraib Prison scandal. “On May 11, 2004 after the Abu Ghraib photos were released, Boston City Council Chuck Turner called a news conference with activist Sadiki Kambo. At the conference Turner and Kambo claimed to have pictures of American soldiers raping Iraqi women which Kambo said he got from the Nation of Islam. The Americans have a right and responsibility to see the pictures, Turner said standing beside a poster showing some of these graphic photos.’(Zinsmeister, 8/4/04) After three days it was found that the photos were blatant fakes and the Globe was forced to publicly apologize for reporting the case of abuse when the photos were nothing more the commercially produced pornography.”(Wikipedia, 04)Let’s hope the Iraqis got that omission.

CNN

Created by Ted Turner and Reese Schonfeld, CNN has been dubbed “the most watched 24 hour news network in the world.”(CNN) It is available to 1.5 billion people in over 212 countries. Also being dubbed as the Clinton news network, CNN has come under scrutiny by conservatives for the practice of liberal bias in their reporting. CNN has been known to be a mouth piece for the New York Times and the Washington Post. All three cover stories with the same slant and Abu Ghraib is really no different.

CNN’s coverage of Abu Ghraib was also extensive and made a habit of plastering shocking photos on T.V. of tortured and tormented Iraqis at the hands of Americans. I also watch CNN. It’s not to say that the coverage was inaccurate or untrue but the constant harping on the issue six months after the fact led many to believe that CNN had a greater hidden agenda in the reporting of the abuse case. Perhaps to discredit the Bush administration and make themselves look right righteous crusaders trying to uncover the truth, increasing the credibility of the left wing.

Discussion

In order to best understand the juxtaposition of the conservative and liberal media outlets we must first understand the broader situation going on. I will attempt to give you a condensed background of the political forces at work when dealing with Abu Ghraib and the media in general.

Currently we have a Republican president in office and have had one in office since 2000. This has not set well with the Democrats very well. As we have seen in the 2000 election with the Florida recall and again in 2004 when the Democrats tried to get the votes of soldiers in Iraq disqualified from the count. A noteworthy side note, most US soldiers are supporters of Bush and his administration.

Perhaps the most talked about aspect in the media has been the American led war in Iraq. Since the beginning of the war, liberals have tried to slam Bush and the American people, as I see it, for going to war with the country that supposedly has nothing to do with terrorism. This is false. On the 16th of March, 1988 Saddam and his followers used chemical weapons on the Kurdish people in the town of Halabjah. “Around 5000 people were murdered, mostly civilians.”(CBS 2004) The fact that the United States was unable to find weapons of mass destruction has been a staging point for much of the liberal criticism. Perhaps someone should tell them that Iraq does have weapons of mass destruction and the United States has the receipt to prove it. A mistake made by the Reagan administration. However, since the weapons of mass destruction debacle has gone away the Liberal media has been starving for a new media headline to discredit the Bush administration. Abu Ghraib would come to be the headline.

There is no doubt in my mind that what happen at Abu Ghraib was a horrible thing and those responsible should have been punished, but was the constant streaming of torture photos really necessary. The unfortunate aspect for all the coverage of Abu Ghraib is that the problem had been uncovered and fixed by the military six months before the media ever caught wind of it. The way the media portrayed the issue was that the supposed tortures were going on, on a daily basis when in fact the abuse had stopped. It wasn’t as if the media had uncovered the evil Americans torturing inmates, it was the military that discovered it and dealt with in accordingly. So I ask, if the Bush administration is so incompetent and don’t have a handle on the war and all its aspects, (AG), then why were they the ones to uncover the problem and fix it.

Another problem I have with the coverage of Abu Ghraib was that of the photographs alone. When the Liberal media showed these pictures they never gave timelines of when the pictures were taken. They just showed pictures and led people to believe that these photos were taken over the course of weeks and even months when they were actually taken on the same day. Probably within hours of each other. But that’s not what the Liberal media would have you know. They attempted to make it look like the torture was an ongoing and everyday practice.

Tim Graham of the Media Research Center noted that “this abuse story is just not going away” it is still the topic on most network news. And there strong focus of the court martial, on the bad apples-it’s as if those troops represent the military at large as far as the media is concerned. The center has been following the bias problem among broadcasters who use the abuse story to build a case against the war in Iraq and the Bush administration. As a sample the group tracked abuse stories from April 29th to May 11th on NBC and found that the network aired 58 stories on abuse in that period. In the past year NBC only aired 5 stories on mass graves found in Iraq from the Saddam Hussein era.”(Graham 2004) From this information it is easy to see where NBC, a known Liberal station, is focused.

Another aspect of the Abu Ghraib case that needs to be addressed is the flagrant use of the word torture. I believe that the word torture really needed to be evaluated and defined before the media as a whole began tossing it around. The context the word carries with it is very different from country to country, culture to culture. To a great deal of Americans the photos were disturbing but were not viewed as torture. To me most of the” photos showed nothing more than you would expect to see at a fraternity hazing.”(Tim 5/3/2004) The others clearly showed textbook procedures in dealing with a person you were interrogating. Although I do admit some of the marine’s actions went too far and deserved to be punished.

The media loved to show the image of an Army ranger restraining a snarling dog from ripping into an Iraqi they were interrogating. Using dogs and other “high stress” tactics to get information out of detainees is completely legal. Though I think the public could have gone without seeing that image. If you were to ask Iraqis who lived under the murderous Saddam Hussein, the Vietnamese and Bosnians if they thought the pictures showed torture, they would probably disagree.

Overall, I would have to say that both the conservative and liberal media’s did a good job of covering the topic. However, Fox and the Washington Times may have been a little to relaxed about the whole issue but did cover all of the main focal points of the scandal. CNN and the New York Times on the other hand may have gone a little overboard on the Abu Ghraib coverage but were well within their rights to do so. I think all agencies had accurate coverage of the issue and presented their slants on the issue very well. It is my contention that a cross between the two media circles would be able to produce better and possibly fairer coverage in the future.

one could easily write a paper stating almost the exact opposite points... with just as many citable points...

but what's the point in that... both papers would be clearly bias...

Is the media anti Christian? Why or why not?

ROME, MAY 28, 2007 (Zenit.org).- Sexual abuses mixed with allegations of Church abuse make for an explosive media formula, as Italians can testify. The state-owned television broadcaster, RAI, sparked a debate after it announced that it wanted to buy the rights to transmit a BBC program, "Sex Crimes and the Vatican."

Last Tuesday the RAI announced its purchase of the documentary. But owing to strong protests over the program's credibility, RAI director general Claudio Cappon stipulated that the talk show that will host the transmission, "Year Zero," also has to give time to Church representatives for a rebuttal.

Along with presenting an account of child abuse, the BBC program makes accusations concerning a supposed Vatican-ordered cover-up. The documentary also accuses Benedict XVI of complicity in covering up sexual abuses in the past when he was a cardinal.

The tendentious nature of the BBC program was exposed in a declaration made last year by English Archbishop Vincent Nichols, who is chair of the Catholic Office for the Protection of Children and Vulnerable Adults.

In an Oct. 2 press release, which came the day after the BBC broadcast the program in England, the archbishop acknowledged the distressing fact of child abuse. He clarified, however, that the part of the program that attacks the Vatican and the Pope "is false and entirely misleading."

The prelate said it was false because the BBC program misrepresents two Vatican documents. The program refers to a 1962 document, "Crimen Sollicitationis," which Archbishop Nichols explained, was not directly concerned with child abuse, but with the misuse of the confessional. A second document, "Ad Exequendam," dated 2001, does not, he argued, hinder investigation of child abuse, but is rather "a measure of the seriousness with which the Vatican views these offenses."

BBC bias

This isn't the first time BBC programs have taken on the Catholic Church. After strong criticism the BBC eventually decided not to transmit its 2004 cartoon series, "Popetown." The cartoon ridiculed Pope John Paul II and the Church.

The cartoon resurfaced last year in Germany, where MTV bought the rights with a view to transmitting it just before Good Friday, reported Deutsche Welle on April 12, 2006. Protests failed to block the program, with MTV deciding to broadcast the entire 10-part cartoon, after a test transmission of the first part, reported Reuters on May 9, 2006.

The BBC's attitude toward religion was examined by the English newspaper Daily Mail in an article published Oct. 23. Following what was termed an "impartiality" summit convened by BBC Chairman Michael Grade, the paper cited "senior figures" as admitting that the broadcasting corporation was guilty of an anti-Christian bias.

Moreover, the Daily Mail reported, during the meeting, BBC executives admitted they would happily broadcast the image of a Bible being thrown away -- but would not do the same for the Koran.

Attacking Mary

The BBC is not alone in its hostility to religion and the Catholic Church. Another recycled show, this time an American cartoon, "South Park," recently came under fire in New Zealand. A May 23 press release by the New Zealand group Family Life International detailed a complaint made by Catholic bishops about an episode insulting the Virgin Mary, broadcast last year.

The bishops presented evidence in an appeal against the decision last year by the country's Broadcasting Standards Authority, which refused to uphold their complaint about the insult to Mary, along with complaints about other episodes.

A lawyer for the bishops, Richard Laurenson, told the High Court in Wellington on Wednesday that the program breached the broadcaster's obligation to maintain good taste, decency and fairness. A decision has been reserved in the case.

Another recent case comes from Canada, where a Canadian Broadcasting Corporation pilot program that portrays altar boys as drug addicts and the communion host as snack food has sparked protests, reported the Ottawa Citizen newspaper on May 16.

The program, "The Altar Boy Gang," was denounced by the Catholic Civil Rights League. "With this program, the CBC has moved into the area of blasphemy of sacred rituals," the organization declared. It also accused the CBC of double standards, noting that the insults toward the Catholic Church came after it hired a Muslim consultant last year to ensure that Islamic practices were respected in the program "Little Mosque on the Prairie."

Earlier this year, it was a recycled Italian export that took on the Church, this time in the United States. The University of Minnesota decided to perform a play, "The Pope and the Witch," by Italian author Dario Fo.

A Feb. 22 article in the Catholic Spirit, the diocesan newspaper of the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis, reported that Minnesota's bishops and several Catholic organizations objected to the play.

The article explained that the play, among other matters, depicts a "delusional, unnamed pontiff." It also depicts the Vatican as being involved in the drug trade, and finishes with the Pope's assassination.

An editorial in the same issue of the Catholic Spirit argued that allowing the performance of such a work "pollutes the atmosphere of mutual respect and that promotes the kind of prejudice and intolerance the university says it opposes."

Infested

The increasing number of programs hostile to Christianity was commented on by Bishop Arthur Roche of Leeds, England, in his pastoral letter for the New Year. In his text, dated Dec. 31, Bishop Roche decried the spreading abuse of Jesus' name in television shows.

"It was if my television set had been infested with anti-Christian and deeply disrespectful and derogatory sentiments," he declared, speaking of his experience in turning on the television recently and switching from channel to channel.

"There is an ease and a carelessness today in which it is possible, without any resistance, to ridicule Jesus, his Church and his followers," noted Bishop Roche. He then went on to urge believers not to become infected by this tendency and to respect the name of Jesus in everyday conversations.

Hostility toward religion was also one of the topics that Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor addressed during a March 28 lecture, at Westminster Cathedral Hall in London.

The archbishop of Westminster declared that he feared contemporary society is increasingly marked by "secular dogmatism or cynicism" toward Christians. He stated: "So when Christians stand by their beliefs, they are intolerant dogmatists. When they sin, they are hypocrites. When they take the side of the poor, they are soft-headed liberals. When they seek to defend the family, they are right-wing reactionaries."

Secularist intolerance

The lecture took place in the context of a fierce debate over government legislation which imposed on Catholic adoption agencies the obligation to hand children over for adoption to same-sex couples. Cardinal Murphy-O'Connor argued that it was no accident that the state's increasing anti-religious tendency takes place at a time of a "new secularist intolerance of religion," which increasingly marks society.

The question of how the media treat religion was dealt with by the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, in its 2000 document "Ethics in Communications." The council acknowledged the many positive contributions of the media to everyday life, and also how people benefit through the transmission of religious news and ideas.

Nevertheless, the ethics document also noted how sometimes religion unfairly suffers at the hand of the media due to incomprehension or even contempt. Often, religious fads are lauded, while legitimate religious groups are treated with hostility, the council explained in No. 18 of the document.

The council called for a greater application of ethical principles in the world of communications. "Communication must always be truthful, since truth is essential to individual liberty and to authentic community among persons," the document exhorted (No. 20). A truthfulness sometimes sorely lacking in some media reports on religion.

Is the media anti Christian? Why or why not?
Most of the media is open to discussing all things, not promoting one view over any other. Some people who work in the Media, as you put it, might be anti something, but most respectable reporters put aside their own feelings and report without their own biases. If you want to paint all media with the same brush, you are in danger of being alienated from a potentially valueable source of information and foster an 'us or them' type of thinking. The media can be a sensationalistic creature, liking to report on things that shock, because that's what many folks like to read/hear about. Because a group has an embarrasing secret come out and it gets reported on does not mean 'they' are 'out to get you'. You are paranoid if that is what you believe.

Why is it that the largest religion in the world has such an inferiority complex? Just look at the US where about 75% of the population is Xtian and yet they're still claiming they're being oppressed! How the fark can you be oppressed when you're the farking majority and you're pushing your religion on everybody?

Why does the U.S. media hate depicting Asian Male/White Female pairing?

White guys who answer these posts always leave this out of their argument about how it's ok for everybody including Asian guys to accept these relationships when these are the same people who would denounce relationships between Asian males and white females. This is obvious by the way the white media in this country pair up Asian females with White males 90-99% of the time when the majority of Asian relationships are between Asian females and Asian males. The media doesn't do this to women of any other race hence you don't see those women have a thing for white males in the same proportion as Asian females.

The influence of the media towards it's targeted audiance has been proven to be substantial in study after study. The media has a substantial affect on Asians in this country because their population is smaller than other ethnic groups here. There is also a lack of an Asian American culture in America leading to a lack of a defined Asian American identity. Behavioural and Emotional Social Difficulties (BESD) is a generic term to describe poor behaviour in children. For some teenagers, BESD can be a card played to explain away anti-social behaviour. Bad behaviour is on the rise, portrayed in the media, which many teens feel they need to live up to in order to achieve status in peer groups. Gang violence, happy slapping, underachieving at school, teenage pregnancy, depression, self harm, rudeness, and avoiding responsibility. These are some of the synonyms which are included on SEN statements of BESD teens and are often the distinguishing reason why they are labelled with BESD in the first place. I want people's opinions and experiences: Are teenagers medically labelled with BESD just naughty teens trying to live up to peer/media pressure or a hard nut or is it a genuine psychiatric condition?

majority, social problem...could be from many roots, number one being poor parenting. Could be malnutrition, many schools are now removing all soda, chips, candy and other garbage from school access. the school are seeing an improvement in behavior after these changes. (google asparatame for one behavioral problem). Political correctness has disempowered teachers in regards classroom behavior.

Of course tv, mtv, rap music and demise of hte extended family all play a part. TV moguls deny any responsibility for the changes in behavior yet charge $2million/minute for advertising time on Super Bowel Sunday!

Yet individual teens can overcome most all of that but most cannot overcome negative peer pressure. The desire to be accepted by peers is too strong for most.

Unless BESD is in the DSM T-R it doesn't exist, in psychology. Although it may become a disorder to be researched further. I can understand not wanting to label kids as anti social personality's. But, to equivocate for the sake of appearances and protection - can easily lead into denial.

My first thought is: BESD does not add anything to the field of knowledge. Most of the criteria above, can be applied, at one point or another across most teens' adolescent years. That, plus they hang out with a clique.

But, we need bright minds and a new paradigm; so, keep digging and probing for the truth, please.

White guys who answer these posts always leave this out of their argument about how it's ok for everybody including Asian guys to accept these relationships when these are the same people who would denounce relationships between Asian males and white females. There can be no doubt that masses of people are manipulated on a regular basis, and in most cases they are never the wiser.

Going clear back to into history, individuals felt the need to place themselves upon some kind of pedestal in front of others. Villages could be subdued by fear of punishment or promise of reward, thereby bringing about the advent of religion.

It goes on today, when we are told that "we may not be able to protect you if Democrats come into power".

In my humble opinion: the biggest problem in the mass media is they only talk to each other and listen to each other. They create their own private self enlarging loop.

i have had experience with these people in 3 states in the U.S. mostly for friends and family,the majority of these people don't give a dam about the truth all they want is to get there reports finished to the satisfaction of there superiors,and there superiors only want what looks good,not whats right for the people they are supposed to be helping.
Reply:i am a social worker. like most professions, we do have our bad apples. many social workers get burned out and do start becoming neglectful of their clients and "hardened" to their problems. also, just like any code of ethics, the nasw code of ethics is very long winded and creates completely unreachable goals by humans.

one thing to remember is that not all social workers belong to nasw. i dont and many others dont because there really is not benefit to belonging. this doesnt mean that we dont follow a code of ethics but we do follow the ethics/conduct codes in place at our respective work environment. to lump all social workers together and ask if they live up to this code of ethics probably is not accurate...many people call themselves "social workers" however to be in nasw, you have to have a master of social work (msw) degree.

i haven't heard much about "human rights" abuses on the parts of social workers (i am in the us). i have heard about people taking advantage of clients for personal gain, etc. however for every foolish social worker that violates a client, there are 100 social workers who dont.

i'm trying to do some community work/awareness wrt body image, health, and self-esteem in the gay community. i'm looking for personal feelings on how gay men, lesbians, bisexuals, and the transgendered are affected by media images within the community. Do you feel that seeing certain body types or identification portrayed more often makes you feel left out? have media images ever made you less likely to be part of cultural/political/social events in the LBGT community? Do you think media plays a role in contributing to negative body image or poor decisions/life styles (eating disorders, drug use, unsafe sex, etc.)? How would you go about changing this (if you feel it needs to be) and what types of awareness/activities do you think could help those who might feel marginalized within the LBGT community?

That is quite a question! I do not feel like I am represented in the media, but I understand that it would be very difficult to be a mirror of every kind of person. Especially since there is not a lot of programing for the LBGT community. For me, I have a love/hate relationship with The L Word. I love that there is a show that shows relationships/lives as "normal", but in reality, it is still just another show that doesn't reflect the life that I live in. I am so thankful for networks like LOGO, the N, Showtime, and others that are wiling to play media for our community rather than just using us for increased ratings during sweeps.
Reply:I'll go with the transgender/transsexual aspect...

Most of the time, they show transgender or transsexual people as "almost but just not quite" their true gender, especially with transsexual women. Like someone who looks ALMOST like a woman, but with a hideously exaggerated deep voice, or whatever... Or someone who looks ALMOST like a man, but then they label him lesbian or some junk.

The LGBT community is severely lacking in a strong "T" support. I have been utterly shocked to see people who avidly support gays and lesbians denounce trans-folk, and gay and lesbians claim that transmen and transwomen aren't "real men" or "real women"... You think these people would KNOW better than to say such hurtful and ignorant things!

It just seems the LGBT media often falls into the same "men in dresses" and "confused lesbian" stereotypes that everyone else does... And that's terrible. Trans-people need a LOT of support, and seeing people who should be supportive being as hateful as anyone else... It's extremely disheartening.

I would change it by adding information booths about trans-folk to Pride events (or floats, as the case may be!), introducing less stereotypical trans-folk to television shows/radio shows/magazines and that sort of thing...

Reply:As a heterosexually oriented true transsexual woman, it is damaging my mental health tremendously.

The selfish queer lobby and their media allies keep grouping their gender queers and she-males (psychosexual males that use their birth sex organs on other people) with people like me. They even have the selfish audacity to group heterosexual cross dressers and intersex (a later category of people with mixed biological sex traits including hermaphrodites).

They are trying to promote Queer Gender Theory or Gender Fluidity Theory that I believe can be summed up as follows: No person is completely male or female psychologically. Everyone is somewhere on the continuous gender spectrum in between.

This view is not only strongly opposed by the Religious Right and Conservative groups in general but also by most feminist organizations, transsexual specific organizations (those that deeply despise the gay lobby for identifying them as peers with she-males and to a lesser extent gays) as well as intersex specific organizations (same as parenthesis above for transsexuals). I have not heard of any opinion on this by heterosexual cross dresser specific organizations on this topic, but it seems to be overall unsupported by its individual members.

Four truths people should know about Gay Media lies.

1)Mathew Sheppard was not killed by a redneck hate monger. His primary killer was a bi-sexual meth addict looking for an easy target to rob.

2)Calpernia Adams’ boyfriend Barry Winchell was not killed by hatemonger but a jealous admirer who paid to have Barry killed.

3)Aphrodite Jones hijacked the life story of Brandon Teena to push her own propaganda. She presented him as a lesbian and did a good job in erasing some of his transsexualism for the good of gay/lesbian people at the expense of transsexual people. The whole story is full of gross inaccuracies and outright lies, that is why so many liable and slander lawsuits are based around it.

4)Former New Jersey Gov. Jim McGreevy has been described by people that know him as more bisexual than gay.

Since I am a mainstream woman who used to live in a city and then a rural area and now the suburbs, I have to take extreme caution just being around heterosexual men that I have no sexual interest in. I even have to be careful about the women I befriend until I know what their man is like. My life depends on it. I have to socialize with such fear because of this false image of transsexuals being portrayed by the gay media allies. I don’t have a corporate closet or private sexual subculture to go back into when I am endangered by their propaganda unlike these people.

The transgender lobby which primarily represents she-males has got laws passed for the entire Washington State and many other areas that allow people to use whatever bathroom and showers they feel they belong in at the moment. Cisgender Heterosexual Men can legally use women’s showers in Washington State as long as they claim they identify more as a female than a male at the time they are in the showers. The only thing that prevents this from actually happening is the lack of public knowledge about this. Many police officers and public accommodation managers are not even aware of this. It was said to me by a Washington State Human Rights Commission Investigator when I filed a case somewhat related to this. I was seeking a waiver to a degree required gym class and did not want to be put in an uncomfortable environment. I lost the case because of this and now won’t go to that community college.

The really sad thing is I actually support gay rights including same sex marriage. I even support she-males living as they please. I just wish they could show more consideration for others including other people’s safety when doing so. They could have lobbied for the state to issue ID cards to publicly accommodate them in specific and not every sex trolling male in general at other people’s expense. Gay organizations can succeed in boosting their image and winning civil rights without trashing other people. They would actually do better at those endeavors if they refrained from that behavior.

I realize that she male is a derogatory term for a biological male who is sexually active as such and lives as a female. I know they prefer to called transgenderists. I do so anyway because they feel like calling me something I wish not to be called so I have the right to do the same thing back.

I expected the thumbs down I got and will be expecting many more. It just goes to show what this community that I do not belong to will NEEDLESSLY resort to in order to advance their cause. It will come back to harm them some day.

Reply:An excellent question deserving a thorough response. We live in a culture of beauty and aestheticism where youth and what is perceived to be beautiful in mainstream media dominates on how we as members of the LGBTQ community view ourselves. Example, if you are to pick-up a latest copy of the local gay/lesbian-rags, what do you see; you see image of women and men with virility and vitality that are often young, mostly thin or muscular for the men, and images of perceived image of femininity for the women. Those of us who are outside of this image are often left with the feeling of being left out in the cold.

With that being said, I remember as I begin my search for my kinky identity, I looked for people with similar background (Asian to be specific) and found little or none in the media that I was looking in. I remember saying to myself, “I can’t be the only one” and started to be more visible in the community that led to where I am today.

I have discovered while on this journey, that while having little to no and inaccurate representation in the LGBTQ community, the leather community creates images of its own to defy popular media. It is with this spirit of defiance that defines the very essence of this community that I now dare call myself to be an intimate part of.

While all body types are represented with various posters, events and personalities, in my opinion, there still, remain somewhat of a gap for different body types and persons of color who identify as being kinky. While the community itself does not discriminate based on skin color or body type, there is that perceived ideal of masculinity. The concept of masculinity is constantly evolving and the gaps for body types and racial barriers are beginning to close. As these fissures conceal with time, it is important that we all realize that we are our own individual; and that one’s concept of beauty should not constitute the rest of the community’s.

Reply:I'm sixty-five yrs. old and feel sometimes in America that I have become invisible. Particularly in LGBT America. It's true that one gets the impression from such shows as Queer as Folk, and that straight show about gays, Will %26amp; Grace, we must all be well-dressed, good looking, under fifty, and have fabulous careers. While I think it is good for young people to be motivated to succeed and be healthy (and to some extent such tv models might have a positive effect) "ordinary" people should be represented, and the fact that success is not always measured in sex and popularity is another message that needs to be balanced in with the rest.

Do Social Workers Really Help Families in Distress?
Some people go into social work because they care about others and want to make a difference in the lives of people who need them. Others go into social work because sometimes, there is power involved and they like to lord over others. I do think that many people choose that career for the right reasons. I don't think, in most cases, that it's a very high paying career and that might be a good thing, (sorry for saying that, social workers...let my explain).

If someone goes into that field, knowing that they could get a degree in something else and make more money, then it might be a hint that their motives are pure. If there were a great deal of money involved, howerer, you could assume that there are going to be those who choose this line of work FOR THE MONEY and they don't really care for the people who's lives they are dealing with. Kind of like teachers.

The main point of tourism advertising lately has been enormous specialization. You get a magazine from the History Channel? It will have more ads for historical places you can visit than anything else. Get the AARP magazine? All about retired people traveling. Science fans? All about museums.

The brands are chiefly hotels and cruise ships, with generally a good bit of advertising for cars (especially SUVs) for long-distance travel.

Local hotels and restaurants will of course advertise in the publications that are of interest to tourists. So, for example, St. Louis Magazine is not only about living here, but visiting here. The classiest restaurants and the most posh hotels advertise.

What this does to the locals is quite different from what it does to those who travel. For the traveler, it's all about getting their money. But for locals, aside from making some places prohibitively expensive, it's primarily about fitting the image created in order to sell the destination to tourists. So, for example, when I was living in Santa Cruz County, the best pizza shop in town had a surfer theme, including a large surf board suspended from the ceiling and old-time photos and magazine ads posted all along the walls. Has nothing to do with pizza, but everything to do with Santa Cruz. Even if you've never been on a surf board in your life, you can't live there without being aware of the surfer mentality.

I am having problems finding more than a few books and articles to show how the media in essence helps to create a social problem for women and some men. Extreme self esteem problems can lead to bad choices more recognized as a social problem- drugs, poverty or abuse due to bad choices because a person feels they are not worthy enough to strive for a better life or life partner as they beleive they've got to grab whatever/whomever comes their way because this might be the best they can get.

Try scholarly search engines like ProQuest to find articles relating to media, self esteem, body image, etc. Most colleges pay for access to these articles so it's free to the students.

Just googling "media body image" popped up a bunch of relevant websites.

Eve Ensler's "The Good Body" is a very interesting book/play on the subject.

Be careful not to say in your paper that the media causes low self esteem which causes eating disorders. While it is true that media images can lower self esteem, that is not the only cause of lowered self esteem. The media is not the sole cause of eating disorders. Similarly, poor self esteem is not the only thing that causes eating disorders. Eating disorders are too complex to say that any one thing causes them. A lot of things contribute to the development of eating disorders. Be careful not to point to just one thing as the ultimate cause.

Most people do not read an article or watch a commercial and truly believe that that product is going to change their life or make them as 'beautiful' as the model in the advert.

Self esteem problems do lead to the illnesses you describe but these people have underlying problems to start with.

and lets face it fashion designers use tall skinny models because the clothes look better on them. If media used so called large, obese, or ugly ladies would people really buy their products. Most people if asked would change some part of their body or looks but that doesn't mean that they feel worthless.

Media may be a trigger for some people but it is certainly not the cause. There would be other things that accelerated their frailities.

Reply:Absolutely not! I am so not into fashion, and I never have been. I wear what I feel comfortable in and what makes me feel that I look nice. I do not care what is in fashion each season to the next.

Many of the "fashionable" clothing look stupid and silly, and I wouldn't be caught dead wearing these silly garmets. I would never pay the price these clothing lines command. I have never understood why anyone would be so foolish as to pay that amount of money for items that just look silly.

Even if I were wealthy beyond belief, I would not wear these types of clothing. I would still shop for items at the local Macy's, or such and only purchase items which I feel attractive and comfortable wearing. Certain colors and styles look good on me and I would never wear a color simply because it is "in" for a season. I see people in clothing that looks terriable on them, yet they paid a small fortune for the outfit or items. Silly beyond belief.

I would never pay a hundred or more for a pare of jeans, or a thousand dollars or more for a dress or gown. I would never wear a silly hat just because it is popular or in style, nor would I cut my hair simply because short is in, or whatever. I style my hair in such a way that it is most flattering to my facial structure, not because a particular style is currently "in".

I also do not believe what I hear on the news simply because it is being reported. Often news is slanted towards the viewpoint of the owner of the news forum, whether it is a newspaper, a news station or radio. I also do not believe somebody is automatically guilty because they have been accussed or arrested.

However, there are a lot of "fashion slaves". I pity them as they do not have minds of their own, simply relying on what others say. For me this sets them up for a lifetime of livng anothers ideal. Following fashion or anything else with a blind eye impedes an individuals, well, indiviuality. It stiffles creativity and imagination. People often brag that they are "fashion slaves", yet fail to understand that they truly ARE slaves and unable to have a mind of their own. That is just too sad, when people have to wait to hear what somebody else tell them they should wear, say or think.

Hi ,I am 22 year old male and suffer from Social Phobia . I aspire to do business in future - say 4-5 years down the line . Are there sucessfull business man who are social phobic ? 2. Social anxiety/phobia can not just be gotten over. There is no known cure for it. There are medictions that can control it so that you will not have panic attacks while with people.

3. Social Phobia is deep seated and just simple mental or verbal suggestions won't eliminate it.

4. Do not feel alone. Millions of people suffer from it.

5. Go to your physician and explain your situation and symptoms, and request help so that you can assimilate out into society and function at the capacity that you would like.

Consequently, militaristic(u.s.army), economic(u.s. chamber of commerce),political(green party),racial(National association for the advancement of colored people) are all examples of social institutions. As for the mass media, economically it is the few media conglomerates who own all the cable,network,internet,newspaper,movie, and other media outlets. This makes them a very consolidated social institution. Meaning, the effect they have on society is usually one dimensional. If I may add, the reason why the government broke up economic trusts like many of the media firms is because the social effect they can have is devastating. If you look at the world media, alot of society has no voice within it. This is because this institution is not diverse in number ,with only a few corporations as memebers. This institution is governed by money primarily,so what sells often maintains a presence while what may be needed is disregarded if it does not sell. This is because the members of this institution that are not business,meaning the governments(france2 and france3, PBS, BBC, etc),are not fully committed to providing alternative programming,especially the united states government.(they tried to shut down PBS).

So, with a small membership, a global audience, and a primarily capitalistic programming motive. First of all giving Noam Chomsky as your proof is just like me presenting Ann Coulter to prove a Conservative talking point.

Noam is a well known leftist propagandist, I give his logic no more weight than you would give Annie.

But lets break it down anyway.

Noam's whole argument is that corporations control media and therefore must be conservative. This is an utter fallcy.

There is nothing conservative about corporations.

Conservatives believe in the free-market, Corporations hate the free market. They want to stiffle competition, a hallmark of a free market. They want to limit wages and increase income for the limited amount of corporate officers, that is completely anti-free-martket. If they could get away with it they would completely outsource labor and employee no Americans paying substandard wages. That is not Conservative.

Conservatives strive for less government control of the individual. Corporations ARE essentially governments controlling individuals. Conservatives do support business but that doesn't equate to supporting corporate entities.

The two arguments people use to support the claim that Conservatives are pro-corporation are that they a) like money and b) the current Republican's are pro-corporation.

First, who doesn't like money? Hillary Clinton loves money, John Kerry loves money, Ted Kennedy loves money, Noam Chomsky writes books because he loves money. George Soros really loves money and so do Conservatives.

Second, those who think the majority of the Republican party are Conservative are not bright enough to participate in this debate. George W. Bush, the biggest pro-corporation President next to Bill Clinton is one of the least Conservative Presidents we have ever had. One could argue successfully that President Clinton was more conservative.

Its obvious that the mainstream media has a leftist bent, Democrat candidates get far more screen time than Conservative, most of this country don't know who Ron Paul or Duncan Hunter are and these are the only truly conservative candidates running. Giuliani is a leftist in wolf's clothing, Romney and Huckabee are religious fundamantalists, that is not conservative.

The media runs endless stories on Global Warming and Socialized medicine, hallmarks of leftist ideology.

The argument is nonsensical. The Corporate elite don't care about right and left except for the precepts of each which give them more control over the individual. Chomsky says this himself. Its all about control. Well leftist politics is all about control of the individual not conservative. Global Warming is about control of man, welfare is about control of man, socialized healthcare is about control of man. Reply:Most of the Media are liberal, because reporters are out there in the public, do stories about the working families, get a good look at what is reality in this country. The Media Ownership, however, is not liberal. Huge Corporations own our media, since Bush took office and the rules have been changed about monopolies, and now, we hear the news they want us to hear. The Liberal Media myth is a propaganda tool employed by conservative radio hosts, columnists and pundits as a convenient excuse why after 20 years their ideology has failed to convince the public at large, and as a memetic inocculation of the public against the evidence that the media bias is in fact a conservative one.

Not only does the liberal media claim have no basis in fact, it also does not make sense considering the issues of media ownership and influence of advertisers. Most media outlets are owned by a handful of conservative corporations and individuals, and funded by usually economically conservative advertisers who have no need for an educated, alert, independent and critical citizenry. What they need is a dumb, bored, cynical and apathetic public that has abandoned all critical faculties and is easily distracted by celebrity gossip and mindless sports games. A public that will believe anything it is told, or nothing at all, which amounts to the same end result. This pro-corporate conservative bias of the media is well-documented and shows itself in consistent under-reporting or ignoring of any information that would lead people to question the fundamental status quo.

Having said that is there a media conspiracy to cover-up, deny or ignore some important realities that are important to Canadians; I think so.

A half-truth, a truth that lies. Anti-family because it was all about division of the family.

So it became obvious that a hidden agenda, a cult feminist ideology had corrupted social theory. Now don't be alarmed anything can be corrupted look at the Catholic Church, and the pedofiles that used the Church to gain access to little boys, and girls. The medical system has been corrupted by those who seek to profit from their own selfish financial gain. So that problem is one of a conflict of interests, between individuals and the greater good of society in general; can happen in any system.

The corrupted model, (a corrupt theory brainwashed unto social workers) was that child abuse was 'men who abuse, women and children victims'. This obviously bigoted and biased model would in my opinion lead to many problems down the road, including the growth of children who would abuse their parents, their families and society in general. It appears child abuse was never seen as children who abuse other children, and themselves.

I believe this is now history and Canada has again been corrupted by another half-truth model, "Stop violence against women', that should be about stopping the abuse of women, men and children.

Im 20 and have been working since I was 13. Just until recently, I've become really interested in the world of politics. Now, as a member of the young generation, I've done research and have listened to the very corrupt main stream media on the topic of Social Security. I wont have any SS when I turn 65 and plan to retire. Is it possible to opt out of paying SS now due to the fact that I wont be getting it when the time comes?

Why is it fair for me to pay (already YTD) $361 and some odd cents into the system when I could be putting that into a private fund for my own retirement?

Once you get your Social Security number you must pay into it. You can not opt out. The government has said for a long time that it will run out but it never has. They will never let it either. If they stopped it millions of elderly and disabled people would be put out on the street. They may extend the age when you might be eligible but they will never stop it altogether. Just take a moment and think of what would really happen to all of those people.

this question is in my mind for several years. i put this in some other site also . I am not satisfied their replies. begging has become a business without capital. Some cases , even the beggars not ready to do that business, their family compulsion to get effortless earning forces them to do that. In some cases the handicapped people whom the society neglect to take care force to live with begging only.

NGO should volunteer to find out the way to live for those who are not interested in that "Capital Less Business". I will be ready to show my solidarity and put my hand with them. It can not be done by a individual like me. We should form a group who can eradicate this begging system which ultimately spoil and ruin our image with foreigners. It can not happen in a day. I am below middle class person thinking this for a long period. I am not interested to threw some coins on their face and getting escaped from the responsibilities.

Reply:They don't mention the 10 year statute of limitations creating a 'rolling amnesty' forever, either, or the family reunification allowance which means the numbers the press discusses are only the tips of the ice berg.

I literally think some of them don't read it. Over and over I see there is a new allotment of 200,000 unskilled visas per year, and no one mentions the additional 1.5 million per year for farm workers (as well as ignoring the family reunification multiplier.)

Others want it for their own reasons. Some of them probably don't think it thru.

They are certainly ignoring a lot of the bad parts. However, I mostly blame it on the Congressmen. For example they put on a huge show of slicing amnesty numbers into thirds, each handled differently, while slipping the 'statute of limitations of 10 years' for border crossings into the bill. This never came up in any debate I saw, and the press reports what it hears and what it is interested in. Statutes of limitations are dry stuff.

Because those are real people paying for that monumental stupidity on May 1, and if you were in any way connected with that you should be ashamed of yourself.

You could also say that the Internet hinders real human-to-human contact, giving people with a lower SES who don't have Internet access an advantage in the real world oh human interaction. Nowadays, computers aren't just for the wealthy though. A computer can be purchased for less than the price of a low-end refrigerator. And I'm sure many people with lower SES can afford some sort of Internet access, at least the $10 a month dialup.

Very much so. The media has desentised us to violence contributing to our high level of excptance in violence in the home and in the community. The constant barage of violence in mens sports like football teaches young men through their idols behaviour that tough and violent is cool. It portrays women as perfect figures and gorgeous rather than normal contributing to many eating disorder in young girls and the current obession women have with plastic surgery. The media also sexualises young girls in the cloths they wear and the way they look contributing to the younger interest in sex. It offen portray women and men in sterotyped roles such as women washing cooking cleaning and washing while men are having a beer.This contributes to our thinking that this is the way we should behave as male and female. This is contributing to family breakdown as many women associate discontent with the imbalance of work within the home. This also contributes to an exceptance that is ok for men to sit around drinking. People on tv are offen are role models so they have a big impact on our behaviour.

Has anyone ever wondered how social workers feel about child abuse and the system to protect children and the red tape and the problems and the media portrayal of high profile cases . . . ?

Personally . . . I have worked with children and families for 8 or so years (in youth offending) I have had regular contact over the years with social workers on CP issues and have been frustrated by the limitations of the system, so much so that I am being sponsored by my employer to undertake my masters in social work and will soon be qualified myself.

I am very frustrated at how easy it is for families to abuse children and hide this and how little power social workers actually have to intervene in cases where proof is limited and families are good at covering things up and avoiding contact.

the lack of funding, staff and resources compound the issues and make it a very difficult job and bashing social workers in the media is not the answer. Bash the governement and the legislators maybe?

Reply:I agree with you that some social workers get a bad rap. However, you have to consider all the issues on both sides. Yes they are limited to what they can do, but just because they are overworked they cannot afford to miss something that might cost a child his life. They chose this profession and knew that most social workers are over worked and these issues were there. None of this is new, it has been going on a long time. They knew what they were walking into and now have to deal with it, it was their choice.

And some social workers are a**holes. We got investigated when one of our kids complained that it was cold in our house.

I told her (the social worker) that if she or the kid wants to pay the bill we may consider changing the setting but, in the meantime, 1/ our kids are provided with shirts and sweaters but if they can't stand to wear more than a t-shirt in winter that's their problem, 2/ our house is warmer in winter than most houses are in summer and he doesn't complain about that and, 3/ go stuff herself.

Never heard from her again. Maybe if they learned to differentiate between stupid complaints and serious ones, they'd be able to do more for kids seriously at risk.
Reply:You don't really seem to have a question here. However, it sounds like you might be a part of title IVE (that is getting an MSW through the system and and having to give back by working in child welfare). This program is one of the critical ways that the federal government is both trying to professionalize child welfare and improve services.

Most people do not realize that many (and in some areas most) employees in social services and child welfare, may have a job title of "social worker" but are in fact NOT social workers. This is to say that they do not have a BSW or MSW in social work. Almost all states except state positions from title protection. This would be like the state calling someone a nurse or a medical doctor without any education. They do receive "training" but this training actually is much more about the bureaucracy than serving youth and families. This does not mean they are not good people, but education does make a difference.

It is great that you are getting your MSW as the more true social workers in child welfare the more it will change.

Reply:I agree. I was a social worker for five years, three of those with foster care children. The pay was horrible, we were on 24 hour call, and often I worked for nothing. Worse, I had a supervisor who liked to play "tricks" on her employees, such as leaving pornographic material on their desks, switching their office assignments at the last minute, turning the air conditioning down to almost freezing, etc. I was injured on the job in her car, and had a four year fight to get the case settled, losing my home in the process. The state wasn't even going to pay my hospital bill from the accident until I got an attorney in a major city and sued them!

Therefor, it is the responsiblity of the mass media and corporations to be as honest and forthright as possible when they are speaking to the masses, however, it is the individuals utmost responsiblity to take that information and use it responsibly. Well, let me tell you a little story.

I work in a genealogy library, and often give presentations to groups of students about immigrants, and the process of becoming a citizen.

Recently, I had such a group of 9 year olds, and was talking about some of the interesting things that can happen. One example was of an immigrant with a girl's name who changed it to a boy's name at the last step of the process, the one step in the process where such a change was possible.

When I asked the group why the person might have changed their name, one little girl looked at me agape, and murmured "He got the CHANGE."

I nearly died laughing, and replied that they didn't do those things in the early 1900's. But another kid said "I think he was a transvest thing."

I explained that in the early 1900's a girl was not allowed to travel alone, and that I think this was an example of a girl who disguised herself as a boy so she could come to America alone, and who finally, at the last step of the process, had the opportunity to reclaim her true name. They seemed unimpressed. One boy said "I think he just wanted to be a girl. I want to be a girl."

I submit to you that these answers and attitudes are very different from those I would have received even 10 years ago. And I think it's because there are so many examples, HEALTY examples I might add, of individuals from a diversity of sexual orientations in our media.

It's a good thing. And it makes it a lot easier for you younger citizens of our country to express your true selves. Feel blessed!

A disabled friend had his outgoing calls cut off, because Virgin media haven't been paid, but his bills are paid on his behalf with his money by social services, and he also has his digital TV service supplied by them.

He cannot even ring the emergency number, they have made no cutbacks on his tv service.

When I contacted virgin media on his behalf and told them the details, they told me he could ring them to sort out the problems, doh he cannot ring out.

The point is they cut off his ability to communicate, so he cannot ring social services, to get them to sort out the problem with Virgin Media, he cannot ring Virgin Media, and he can't get out to communicate by letter, (he can't write clearly anyway) So what did they hope to accomplise by cutting all his outgoing phonecalls.

If they cut his favourite TV channels instead of the phone, he could communicate with both Virgin media, and social services to sort the problem out.

UK: Have Virgin media got their priorities right?
Disability Discrimination Act comes to mind!! Get in touch with the DRC ( Disability Rights Commision) They have a website. You can get advice from them, but get them on the case and you can guarantee it will get sorted. They are fantastic.

Of course it's not acting responsibly. It's run by people for profit, and they'll appeal to the lowest common denominator to maximise them, you can see it already in TV and print media. The internet's saving grace at the moment, as with the radio, is that it's not concentrated in the hands of a few (yet!).

If you find one please post it. I have been before a Judge 2 times and will be having to apply a 3rd time. I have had a lawyer, and this time I had a rep. My first doctor didn't complete the surgery, second dr completed what the first didn't. He told me I would have to live with the pain from here on out. I have been trying for 10 years. That is how bad the first dr. messed me up. Oh to boot I can't sue him, because he filed for bankruptcy.

When someone says a certain behavior is bad and then participates in that behavior, it means he is inconsistent. it means he is a sinner and a poor role model. When someone says a certain behavior is bad and then justifies their own participation in that behavior, that is hypocrisy. Now, when all the gory details are revealed and the story dies, nobody will remember to check back whether the guy actually was guilty of pastoral wrongdoing, but he will remain condemned by the public. Such is the nature of our political news machine.

The charge of hypocrisy fits better with the news investigators. They claim to 'only be doing their jobs' by digging up the scandalous, using the 'if it bleeds it leads' news business philosophy, yet when the attention of America is turned upon their own personal lives, they become indignant at the invasion of their privacy. So in essence, they believe they are autonomously responsible for revealing private secrets but are exempt from others prying into their own. This is real hypocrisy.

I'm writing a paper on the evolution of elections in America. One of the things I am discussing is the impact that the growth of social media has had on election campaigns. What I really need are some examples of political news stories that were first uncovered and reported on by political bloggers, and then those stories became widely reported in the mainstream media. I am certain that this has occurred at least a few times, but beyond George Allen's "macaca" debacle in 2006, I can't remember any. Can anyone help me out here?

Reply:I can't think of any specific examples, but I do have something worth noting. One difference between the sources is that bloggers typically don't need to be concerned with accuracy. You might find numerous cases of them delivering a story first, but you'll also find a much larger number of stories brought forth by bloggers that are later proven false or simply might not be fully accurate.

You can look at just the lottery winning tickets and it paints a much different picture than looking at all of the tickets as a whole.

I bet that a large portion of political stories or hollywood stories first get announced by bloggers, but it can be nearly impossible to find that one lone blog somewhere before the mainstream media reports the story. A lot of the time, the blogger simply had first hand experience or second hand (their friend saw/heard it).

Personally, I think over use of TV is bad for a child's development. Using it as a babysitter is the worse thing in the world a parent can do. They need outside time and play structure as well as mental development with books and objects. Media being used as a learning tool is fine, but mostly over-used.

Why are you complaining about the media? Regardless of whatever the media says about something, you're entirely free to believe whatever you want about whatever you want.
Reply:Quite possibly, would make sense of why the country is now full of cynics and people who think the country is doomed.

Let's face it, if the media's continual fascination with "celebrity" is the social standing of the country, it will only teach children that to cut corners rather than earning the respect and gaining the experience to do a job is the way forward. We are also not at liberty to accept Religion as being "The Way" ... but even as an agnostic I would accept that the social "policies" of the bible are at least better than a corrupt media with their own political agenda (ie. no matter how insanely nasty, it is sales of papers that count).

All of the 'news' that we get tends to be filtered to develop opinion. Religion used to be used to do the same thing.

People in power need to use some vehicle to maintain it. Religion is a powerful force of opinion delivery, but now so is the media.

You can't rely on the media to teach ethics and responsibility. Society needs role models that people cn look up to. We need strong families to teach children morals. TV can not be our babysitters in life.

you can get them to watch IT shows to get them know more about the blogs, videos, or through the newspaper to tell them about the blogs, or show them the internet blogs.

Reply:Most of the people visit himself here and they know what is going on here. But many people reach through other websites like http://www.medianowonline.com which is in Google index and yahoo too. People read something there then they come on these sites.

Alternative and Underground media are usually more accepted by a younger demographic that are known for abandoning more traditional forms of media.

Said underground media can provide abstract thought (theoretically), fresh views and ideas to a younger generation that otherwise would not be interested in such politics.

Hell yes!! Look at the way things are, today, in the USA. The media are pretty much mouthpieces for the Government. Investigative reporting is pretty much dead.

If the media were to print the truth about things like the national debt, the Government's fooling around with economic statistics, etc., people would be a LOT more pissed off than they are, right now. But when the media simply report that "unemployment is down" without examining the facts and assumptions underlying that conclusion, it makes people think that things aren't as bad as they are.
